While bruises will normally be of no serious medical concern and heal themselves within 10 days, they can be extremely painful during the worst phase of their existence. The long term effects of a bruise last much longer than the actual trauma from the injury or cause of bruising and can also lead to a noticeable loss of pigmentation around the affected area. Normally, the bruises are a result of damaged blood vessels from which the spilled blood starts to collect near the surface of the skin. This will cause the skin around the traumatized area to appear black or dark blue. A bruise can be caused by a number of reasons such as falling off your bicycle or losing your balance while rollerblading or skateboarding. Every time you bump or bang into something with some considerable force and the skin does not break, chances are that you will develop a bruise. The rate at which a bruise will heal depends on a number of your body's internal factors and overall health.
Initially, the bruise will appear bright red as a result of the fresh blood accumulating in the area. In a couple of days, the hemoglobin (which is an iron containing substance rich in oxygen that is contained in the blood) will change the color of the contusion to a bluish purple; and in another 5 days, the bruise may again change color and start to look greenish or yellowish before it eventually disappears. Some people are more prone to bruising than others as a result of how tough the skin tissue is, whether any medication is being taken or even depending on the presence of some serious medical condition or infection. Elderly people will face increasingly frequent instances of bruising as the blood vessels tend to become fragile with age. It is very important that one knows how to distinguish the difference between a bruise and more serious skin problems. If the bruise does not go away after 2 weeks or the swelling seems to increase or there is any amount of pain, visiting the doctor is highly advised. While the application of milk would not really help the condition, you could increase your intake of parsley as it is a rich source of vitamins that will help in the curing process of bruises. You could also immerse the affected area in some water containing witch hazel as this will rejuvenate the circulation of blood and help in the quick healing of the bruise.
