The condition where there is an excessive prominence of body or facial hair is known as hirsutism. While the condition affects both, men and women, most men will not really find it to be a problem at all. However, the same condition can be quite embarrassing for a woman and most women will suffer a significant amount of mental trauma and may even start to slowly withdraw from social circles as a result of the wide spread misunderstanding of the condition. The amount of hair present on the male body and that present on a woman's are more or less the same. However, certain male hormones will cause a man's hair to be much darker, as well as longer than in females. An imbalance in the levels of the estrogens (the female hormone) and androgens (male hormones that contain testosterone) will cause the development of this condition. During the aging process of each individual, the hormone levels gradually recede.

However, if a woman's estrogen levels decrease much faster than her androgens, the male hormone will become more dominant and lead to the development of a stray, dark facial hair, or worse - depending largely on the extent of the imbalance. While heredity factors are always a likely cause of the condition, a large number of women experience hirsutism as a side effect of having Polycystic Ovarian Disease where the eggs are not expelled from the ovary, which is a natural cycle. If your hirsutism is caused by the occurrence of the ovarian disease, treating the disease will significantly help resolve the dark hair. However, in most other cases, hirsutism is irreversible and while laser hair removal is becoming increasingly popular, it is not always dependable. If a person has dark skin, the laser treatment will actually do more damage than good as the laser is guided toward the skin instead of the hair. Some options that women use to nullify the effect of the condition on their daily lives are to either bleach the hair, which will depend largely on the length of your hair as it will only work on short hair; waxing - which is always popular but can be significantly painful; shaving, which is probably the easiest and fastest way of removal, but the re-growth of hair is extremely fast; and electrolysis - which is the most permanent of all, but can be relatively time consuming as each hair needs to be treated independently by sending a small amount of electricity through the strand, thereby killing it from the root.
