A nail infection can be a major inconvenience for almost anybody. Although the infection poses no serious medical risks, the fact that we use our fingernails for so many daily chores and actions, whether it is scratching an itch, peeling a fruit or playing a guitar, a nail infection can seriously hamper our daily routine. Most of the time, the infections noticed on the nails are actually caused by a more serious, underlying medical condition that needs to be taken care of at a higher priority. An issue like candida albicans is the buildup of yeast within the body. The excess yeast tries to escape the body, and more often than not will see its best route to be the nail bed.

A prime symptom of a person if suffering from this condition is the appearance of bumps or blisters underneath the cuticle. Another common infection of the nails is when fungi invade the hyponychium. Initially, one will notice a split in the nail all the way from the nail bed. This splitting of the nail is known as oncholysis. The end of the nail will also turn yellow or white and there will be a development of keratin debris under the nail which will only further increase the separation of the nail. The nails can also be adversely affected by the excessive exposure to detergents and cleansers. One must stay away from these products as much as possible. The use of gloves or other protection when dealing with any substance that reacts with the skin or nails is highly recommended. It is also important to periodically and regularly moisturize your nails by soaking them in some water, then applying some kind of mild moisturizer. This will improve the water retention capabilities of your nails. As always, be very careful in choosing your cosmetics and nail polish as they could result in permanent damage to the nail bed as well as root. An excessive usage of nail polish remover is also known to be a substantial contributor to the damage of nails. To get rid of the infection in your nails, you could also try soaking them in a tub of Listerine for about 20 minutes. The anti bacterial and anti fungal properties of the liquid will not only destroy the infection, but will also give your nails a healthy, clean look. Increase your intake of calcium significantly as this will help in the regeneration of your nails.
