A common mistake that most of us make is not protecting our skin from the harmful ultra violet rays of the sun. Skin cells called melanocytes produce the pigment melanin, which determines the color of our skin. When the skin is exposed to the UV rays, the skin produces more melanin to guard the skin from damage. Overexposure to the sun makes the cells produce more melanin, giving a dark tone to the skin. So, you must use sunscreen whenever you step out in the sun. The highest amount of sun damage is caused between 11 am to 4 pm when the sun's rays are harshest. If you continue venturing out in the sun without protection, or if the sun tan is left unattended for a long time, it will take a very long time for your skin to return to its original color. Other than darkening the skin, over exposure to sunlight can agitate the sebaceous glands and cause your skin to become oily and prone to pimples and blackheads. It is also important to keep your skin well hydrated. For that, drink lots of water everyday and also consume lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.
There are many natural skin care ways in which you can lighten your skin tone. Wash your face with water and a face wash, and apply any of the following natural products or face packs for lightening the skin. Potato is one of the best products for treating skin tan, since it has natural bleaching agents. Apply the juice of a raw potato on the affected skin, leave it on for about 20 minutes and then wash it off with cold water. For quicker results, you can also mix one teaspoon of potato juice and lemon juice each and apply on your skin. Let it stay for 20 minutes and then wash it off. Lemon and other citrus fruits also have natural bleaching agents. An effective way to treat suntan and dry skin is by scrubbing it with natural ingredients. Mix sugar, lemon juice and glycerin and scrub it on your face in circular motions to scrape dead cells and tan away. However, be gentle with the scrubbing and make sure you don't hurt your skin. Turmeric also has lightening effects on the skin and disinfects it of impurities. Milk is also a natural skin care moisturizer and cleanser. Mix 1 tablespoon of turmeric and 3 tablespoons of milk and apply the pack on your face. Let it stay for 20 minutes before washing it off.
