Dandruff is a common scalp problem that is suffered by most people at some time or the other. It is essentially dead skin that is being discarded in an abnormal manner. Normally, the scalp is constantly discarding dead skin cells at a steady rate. Cells die and are replaced by new healthy cells all the time. However, this process is barely noticeable due to the small amount of dead skin that is being discarded at any particular point of time. Sometimes though, things go wrong and dead skin is either discarded in at an abnormally high rate, or else the cells accumulate on the scalp and then fall off in clumps. This is what gives rise to the flakes that are visible on a person's hair and that fall off in a shower of dust when the hair is combed or otherwise disturbed.

Sometimes, all that is needed to get rid of dandruff is more thorough shampooing. For the next week or so, ensure that you work the shampoo into your hair thoroughly, massaging your scalp as you do so, in order to dislodge any dead skin cells. Regularly getting rid of dead skin in this manner often solves the problem. If this does not work, you can try oiling your hair regularly. Dandruff is sometimes simply the result of a severely dry scalp. If the problem still persists after regular oiling, you should start using an over the counter anti dandruff shampoo. Each anti dandruff shampoo usually works in a different way, so unless you know exactly what is causing the dandruff, you may need to spend the next month trying several different anti dandruff shampoos. Spend at least ten days using a single shampoo, and if it does not work, try another one.

The best way to get thick, strong hair is to consume a healthy diet. To a large extent, your hair type depends on your genes. Some people naturally have thick hair, while others have rather thin hair. You should therefore not expect any drastic change in the texture of your hair, but a good diet will have some impact. Avoid getting caught up in any "hair diets", as these are not really practical. Hair requires too many different nutrients, and focusing on a handful of foods will not deliver all these nutrients. What you need is simply a healthy, well rounded diet that gives your body all the nutrients possible.
