Face shape is an important factor in choosing a suitable hairstyle, and unfortunately, most people don't even stop to think about what their face shape is and what styles will work well for it. Fortunately, you seem to be taking this into consideration. Firstly however, you will do well to ensure that your face is in fact round. This might seem too obvious to require any thought or examination, but the fact is that many people are unable to properly judge their face shape. This is sometimes due to a person's current hairstyle, which alters the apparent shape of the face. At other times, it may simply be due to a personal perception - an overweight person will often tend to think that his or her face is round. However, full, round cheeks do not always make your face round.

To properly determine your face shape, it is advisable to measure the dimensions of your face. The length must be measured from the hair line to the chin. Breadth must be measured at three locations - across the forehead, from cheekbone to cheekbone, and across the jaw. It is advisable to use a ruler for these measurements, as it can be held steadily in front of the face, without the contours of the face affecting the measurements.

If it turns out that you do indeed have a round face, then you need hairstyles that give your face more length. Avoid very short hair, and in particular avoid cutting your hair at the jaw line, as this makes it look still more round. You should try to keep the hair at the sides relatively thin, so that it does not add volume to the middle of your face, which is the widest part. You should keep your hair at least a couple of inches longer than chin length, and use layers to add volume at the top. Avoid cutting your hair in a uniform length - this tends to make the face look wider.

You must also consider your hair type, and remember that no face falls firmly into a single category. Ultimately, each individual is different, and it is advisable to take your hairdresser's opinion when getting your hair cut, as he or she is the one who can see and judge your face and hair. In addition, simple make up techniques such as highlighting your cheekbones and brow can also help give your face a longer appearance.
