Every day 50-100 strands of hair fall naturally to accommodate new hair that replaces the old, damaged strands. But if the rate at which the hair falls exceeds the rate at which new strands grow, it leads to bald patches and a receding hairline. Nutritional deficiencies, insufficient blood supply to the scalp, stress, prolonged illness and hormonal imbalances also result in hair loss. Constant exposure to the harmful rays of the sun, pollution, washing hair daily and excessive combing or brushing can contribute to hair loss. Heredity and advancing age also play an important role in balding.

There are many natural hair care remedies that prevent hair loss which may not be very effective if the balding is due to genetic reasons or aging. Massaging your scalp with circular movements of the finger tips is an effective way of improving the blood circulation in the scalp, making the roots of the hair strong and removing dead cells that cause dandruff. This is particularly effective if done just after a bath as it also encourages the release of natural oil which reduces drying and keeps the hair nourished and healthy. Applying a paste of ground lime seeds, black pepper and a few drops of water prevents hair fall. Massaging the hair with coconut milk or coconut oil mixed with a few drops of lemon juice nourishes the hair leaving it healthy and strong. Crushed garlic cloves massaged into the scalp every fortnight increases blood supply to the hair cuticles thus strengthening the hair and maintaining the shine. A mixture of honey, cinnamon powder and olive oil massaged into the scalp twice a week, half an hour before a bath, stimulates the hair follicles and promotes hair growth. A combination of almond oil, castor oil and olive oil in equal parts, massaged into the scalp and left on overnight, enhances hair growth and improves hair texture. Drinking a concoction of spinach and lettuce juice in a 1:1 proportion or carrot juice and alfalfa juice in equal proportions daily helps in treating hair loss.

A balanced hair diet complete with foods rich in vitamin B6, vegetables, whole grains, fruits and dairy products promotes the growth of hair and reduces hair loss which results in balding. Avoid exposing your hair to pollution and direct sunlight by wearing a hat or a scarf while going out. This prevents damage and drying of the hair which result in hair fall. Being relaxed and calm also prevents excessive hair fall.
