Acne is a skin disorder that affects the face, neck, shoulders, upper arms, back and chest. The sebaceous glands secrete oil or sebum through the hair follicles giving the skin its natural texture. Sometimes, the pores on the skin get blocked by dead cells or cosmetics giving rise to zits or pimples. Whiteheads, blackheads, oily skin, inflamed lesions, papules and pustules are other symptoms of acne. An outbreak of cysts and deep pitted scars indicates a severe case of acne.
An increase in the hormonal levels, especially testosterone at puberty is the main cause for the occurrence of acne. Bacterial infections, hormonal changes in women around menses, over active sebaceous glands, vitamin deficiencies, stress, junk food and pollution could lead to acne. Besides, picking at or squeezing a blemish, scrubbing the skin hard or the excessive use of cosmetics may result in a spread of the infection leading to this disorder. Acne could also be a hereditary problem.
Drinking plenty of water moisturizes the skin naturally and detoxifies the blood reducing the occurrence of acne. Adding a few drops of lemon juice or a spoon of honey to warm water or drinking green tea will help in combating the acne. Washing your face several times a day with cold water helps to reduce the accumulation of sebum and dead cells thus preventing the clogging of pores. Avoid using loofas and face scrubs regularly as friction worsens acne. A natural face scrub made with oatmeal and aloe gel, used gently on your skin once in a way, will help to reduce the greasiness. A combination of ground almonds and honey is an excellent face mask for acne prone skin. Apply liberally and wash it off after it dries completely. Dabbing on a combination of milk cream and a few drops of lemon juice on the affected area will kill the bacteria that cause infection. Lemon juice and rose water applied to the skin and washed off after half an hour will also reduce the spread of acne. Dabbing the face with a cotton swab soaked in apple cider vinegar will keep the skin oil-free. After a wash, use aloe vera gel as it absorbs the excess oil that is secreted. Using water based cosmetics and a sunscreen specifically made for oily skin is recommended to counter the buildup of oil on the skin thus reducing the clogging of pores. Applying beaten egg yolk to the affected area prevents scarring as it is rich in Vitamin A.
