The skin between the upper thigh and buttocks normally becomes a darker color due to chafing which is common problem in the case of heavily built individuals. This is caused by the friction between the legs and is aggravated by wearing tight fitting clothes. Excessive moisture or sweating tends to worsen the condition. The discoloration is usually accompanied by soreness, redness, pain or a burning sensation. Prevention is the best remedy for chafing.

Using a mild antibacterial soap or body wash is recommended as they leave fewer residues on the skin and get rid of infectious microbes efficiently. Ensure that your skin is dried well immediately after a bath. Using a liberal amount of your favorite talcum powder will keep you smelling fresh throughout the day along with preventing the friction between the thighs by absorbing moisture. Petroleum jelly or a thick moisturizing lotion will reduce friction as well. Applying an anti-bacterial ointment before going to bed, after cleaning the area well, and bandaging it with gauze will allow the skin to breathe and promote healing. Clothes that are soft and gentle on the skin prevent chafing. Clean, well dried cotton clothes that fit well are the most comfortable in such cases because they allow the skin to breathe. Avoid washing your clothes with strong detergents or highly scented fabric conditioners as they tend to irritate the skin. Wear loose clothes especially when exercising as they don't rub against the skin. Losing weight is recommended as it will reduce chafing considerably.

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day keeps the skin well hydrated and reduces the formation of salt crystals through perspiration. These crystals increase the friction between the thighs causing discomfort. Lemon juice is known for its natural bleaching properties but should not be used on its own as it is acidic in nature. Rubbing the area with a few drops of lemon juice in a milk cream base or oil base, 10-15 minutes before a bath, will lighten the discoloration and nourish the skin. Applying a paste made with turmeric powder, gram flour, curd and lemon juice and washing it off after half an hour will also reduce the dark tone. Almond oil is also known to lighten dark patches. Rubbing some calendula oil on the affected area is an effective remedy against chafing due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Foods rich in Vitamin A, C and E are recommended as they fight skin damage.
