What is the difference between acid & alkaline perms?

Information on Acid and Alkaline Perming
The process of perming hair includes the use of certain chemicals, and acid and alkaline basically refers to the pH value of these chemicals. The process typically involves wrapping the hair around rods that will shape the curls, and then applying an acid or alkaline chemical solution that temporarily breaks down the structure of the hair. A second chemical is then applied to reform the hair structure, this time in the shape in which the hair has been wrapped around the rods. Heat may or may not be used during the procedure.
Chemicals commonly used to perm hair include glycerol monothioglycolate, which is acidic, and ammonium thioglycolate, which is alkaline. Alkaline perms are usually used for hair that is rough and strong, while acid perms are usually milder and are therefore used form more delicate, soft hair. Acid perms also usually require heat, while alkaline perms can typically be performed without the use of heat. The key consideration when deciding whether to get an acid perm or an alkaline perm is therefore hair type. If you have thin, delicate hair, an acid perm is advisable. This is however a general point — there are more subtle differences in hair types, and it is therefore best to let your hairdresser decide what kind of perm is best for your hair.
