Melanin is the substance that gives skin its color and acts like a natural sunscreen. Even a slight exposure to sunlight can increase the melanin production. The increase in melanin production causes the skin to darken thus forming a protective barrier against the harmful rays of the sun. Hyperpigmentation is another cause of darkening of the skin. In this case, the skin produces too much of melanin as a result of skin disorders. Hormonal changes, stress, lack of exercise and pollutants can also cause the skin to darken. Cosmetics and skin care products that do not agree with your skin may strip your skin of the essential natural oils, leaving it dark and lifeless.

Having glowing skin depends on a healthy lifestyle. Dehydration, a problem prevalent during the summer, causes the skin to look dull, dark and wrinkled. Increasing your intake of fluids will keep your skin hydrated and healthy. A balanced diet with adequate amounts of cereals, pulses, fresh fruits and vegetables will ensure that the skin remains nourished and healthy, thus guaranteeing a natural glow on your skin. Foods rich in vitamin C rejuvenate the skin and keep it glowing. A few deep breathing exercises and meditation will help to reduce stress, a factor that adversely affects the skin. Sleeping well will also help to relax your skin thus keeping it healthy.

To prevent your skin from darkening, mild skin care products that suit your skin type are recommended. Using a sunscreen, even if you are sitting at the window or going out for a short period, is recommended. Steam treatments help to open up clogged pores and remove dead skin cells that form a dull layer on the face. Washing your face regularly prevents the accumulation of dead skin cells and grime. The use of vitamin E oil is also beneficial as it is an excellent antioxidant which prevents skin damage. Massaging the face daily with this oil also increases blood circulation and assists the production of new skin cells. Almond oil and aloe gel are also known to nourish skin and reduce blemishes, giving the skin a healthy glow. Raw potato juice, tomato juice and cucumber juice are considered natural bleaching agents. Massaging the skin with either of the juices will reduce the tan and lighten blemishes. Turmeric powder mixed in milk cream also makes an excellent face mask for lightening the skin. Wash off the mask after 10-15 minutes to reveal glowing skin.
