Since the skin is the largest and most exposed organ of the human body, it is exceptionally prone to damage as well as other problems. While in some cases, the development of a swelling in the skin is of no serious medical concern, it could also be a symptom of a severe underlying medical condition. One of the most common causes of a swelling in the underarm, however, is the tendency of certain hair follicles to change their direction during growth and start to grow toward the skin. Certain actions like shaving may leave some of these hair follicles with rather sharp edges, which will enable them to penetrate the skin and continue to grow within the skin itself. This condition is as common as it is painful and is known as in-growing hair. The condition is also frequently referred to as 'razor bumps' owing to its common cause. If this is, in fact, the condition that currently affects you; you will notice a little redness around the inflammation as well as some mild pain along with a considerable amount of itchiness.

While there are no real home treatments or therapies that will help in the removal of ingrown hair, there is a technique that has proven to be quite successful in retrieving the hair from the skin, while still making sure that the area is not prone to infection. You must first prepare your skin for the procedure by using a gentle scrub to exfoliate the region and apply some water over the affected part to soften the skin as well as the follicle of hair. Using any solution or product that contains some amount of buttered fatty alcohol, disinfect the area. Once this has been done, with the help of a pair of tweezers, carefully grab hold of the ingrown hair and gently lift it out of the skin. It is important that you do not pluck the hair out with force as this may leave the pore susceptible to infection which could lead to even further complications.

Another possibility is that the swelling could be an indication of an irregularity of your lymph nodes. The lymph nodes are tiny, bean shaped glands that are located all over the body and are important parts of the immune system. In some instances, the condition leads to a significant amount of pain but this is not always the case. Applying a heated pad or warm towel on the painful area will significantly reduce the pain. Approaching your doctor for a check up would be your best option as some medical tests may need to be carried out to correctly identify the cause of the swelling.
