Hair loss is a common symptom of thyroid disorders. Individuals with hypothyroidism frequently experience hair fall and this can be a worrisome experience. The hair may start to become thinner and thinner gradually, or it can fall off in chunks. Hair texture may also be altered leading the hair to become coarse, dry and delicate. Hypothyroidism refers to a reduced production of the thyroid hormone in the body. The thyroid hormone plays an important role in the metabolism of the body. An inadequate amount of the hormone in the body affects metabolic activity of the body. This also affects the hair follicles in the scalp, which results in the reduced hair growth and poor quality of existing hair. Effectively treating the hypothyroidism is the most important step towards preventing hair loss.

In addition to the hypothyroidism treatment, there are a number of home remedies that you can use to improve hair growth and prevent hair fall. Rubbing a paste of fenugreek seeds and water into the hair works well to prevent hair fall. You may leave the paste on for about half an hour and then rinse it off. This must be done regularly for at least one month. You can also boil a cup of mustard oil with some henna leaves. Massage this on the areas where the hair is thinning. Rubbing the scalp vigorously after a cold shower helps to improve blood circulation in the scalp, thereby promoting hair growth. Massaging the scalp and hair with a solution of egg yolk and honey is also effective. A natural shampoo can be made at home by mixing a couple of tablespoons of raw gram powder with four tablespoons of yogurt and one tablespoon of lemon juice. You can apply this to the hair and leave it on for about an hour, and then rinse the hair with lukewarm water. An effective herbal remedy is made by boiling a mixture of gooseberry, acacia and soap nut in equal proportions of hundred grams each, in about two liters of water. Keep boiling until the water decreases to half the amount. This may be then applied to the scalp and hair strands. A scalp massage with warm coconut oil is also very beneficial and nourishing for the hair.

It is also important to regulate your hair diet in order to provide adequate nutrition for the hair. Structure your diet in such a way that it includes a lot of protein and iron rich foods. Minerals such as magnesium, calcium and zinc are also very essential for proper hair growth. Stay away from hair dryers or straighteners, as well as hair cosmetics. Stress is known to cause hair fall and hence must be avoided through meditation and relaxation techniques.
