Dark patches may appear on the skin as a result of pigmentation disorders. The skin gets its color due to the production of melanin by the skin cells. If for some reason the skin cells become damaged, the production of melanin is also hampered. An increased production of melanin leads to darkening of the skin. These patches may appear on particular areas of the body or sometimes the entire body may also get affected. Darkening of the skin may also take place due to chafing or rubbing of the skin. This generally occurs on the hips, inner thighs and buttocks. This especially happens in the case of individuals who are overweight. Excessive sweating in these areas may also lead to patches of dark skin. Another cause of dark patches on the body is an overproduction of insulin. As the body is unable to use all the insulin, it tends to get accumulated in certain areas, making them appear dark.

There are several home remedies that can be used to get rid of dark patches on the skin. These must be used regularly for best results. It is a good idea to incorporate them as part of the day to day routine. Lemon juice is the most well known and effective remedy for lightening the skin. One teaspoon of lime juice may be mixed with a teaspoon each of milk powder and honey. Add a few drops of almond oil to this and apply to the dark areas. Leave this on for about twenty minutes and then wash it off. This will have a bleaching effect which will serve to lighten the skin. Oatmeal mixed with yogurt and some tomato juice will also help to lighten the complexion. Potato, is another natural bleaching agent, and works well to get rid of dark areas on the skin if used regularly. You may place slices of raw potato on the darkened areas. Turmeric powder mixed with a couple of drops of lemon juice is also a good natural remedy for pigmented skin.

Vitamin E is very effective in treating skin pigmentation. You can mix the contents of a vitamin E capsule with some castor oil and apply to the affected skin. Vinegar, being acidic in nature, is useful in removing darkened patches. You can mix vinegar and water in equal parts and use this to cleanse the pigmented skin. Apple cider vinegar may also be used for this. Juice extracted from onions also works well to lighten the skin.
