Our hair needs constant care and attention, and neglect could result in hair fall and dull hair that lacks luster. The hair appears rough and dull when it is in need of moisture. It is important to stay away from harsh shampoos that have high levels of chemical content in them. Hair dryers, straighteners and chemical treatments have an adverse effect on the hair and leads to dry and brittle hair. Environmental factors could also result in the hair appearing rough and dry. Increased exposure to the sun and hot dry air could result in rough hair. Malnutrition or nutritional deficiencies also cause the hair to become dull and lifeless. The hair roots derive nourishment from the food that we consume, and hence denying the body of essential nutrients will also affect the hair. Certain illnesses may also be an underlying cause of problem hair.
It is advisable to use a mild shampoo, preferably an herbal one that will clean and nourish the hair at the same time. Also, if the hair is extremely rough and dry, do not brush or comb it. This will only lead to the hair getting pulled out. You may comb the hair during a shower, after applying conditioner. Deep conditioning treatments are very beneficial for the hair. You could also use regular hot oil treatments using coconut, olive or almond oil. Fruit oils may also be used on rough hair. They help to smoothen and soften the hair. Applying a paste of henna and yogurt is also helpful. Egg yolk and henna applied to the hair also serves to moisturize and rejuvenate the hair. Mayonnaise is believed to be an effective natural hair conditioner. You can warm up some mayonnaise and apply to the hair. Use a warm damp towel to wrap around the head. Leave this on for about fifteen minutes and then shampoo and rinse.
Another well know remedy for treating dull hair is to pour some apple cider vinegar all over the hair and then rinse with cold water. A paste of baking soda and water may also be applied to wet hair using a comb. A paste of ripe banana and avocado also works well to bring shine to the hair. Start eating healthy and include lots of protein in your diet, through foods such as eggs, meats and beans. Zinc deficiencies are normally the cause of dry and dull hair, therefore foods that are rich in zinc must be consumed. Essential fatty acids are necessary for healthy hair and contained in foods such as nuts and seeds.
