Dark lips are a common occurrence when you are exposed to the sun over long periods of time. Sometimes, they are also a matter of heredity. You need to first determine which cause applies to you and then start working towards taking care of the problem. If you have inherited dark lips, there is very little you can do to remove the darkness. You also need to know that whatever measure you take to remove the discoloration, will always be temporary and the darkness will always re occur after a while once you stop the remedial measure.
For most part, if you have dark lips due to over exposure to the sun, you will notice that the upper lip darkens more than the lower one, which remains very light by comparison. The first thing you need to do is to stop your lips from tanning further. To take care of this, you should make it a permanent rule to apply sun screen to your lips several times a day, irrespective of whether you are going out. This is the first step and will help to stop the process of darkening at once. It is easy to find a lip balm or cream that contains sunscreen in varying sun protection factors (SPF) in any pharmacy or drugstore. It is better to use these as opposed to regular ones. Opt for a lip balm or chap stick that has an SPF of at least 30.
In order to lighten the color of your lips, apply fresh aloe vera gel. If used regularly and repeatedly, this is an excellent remedy for lightening dark tans and can show results as quickly as a week into application. Leave four strands of saffron soaked in milk cream for 24 hours and apply this to your lips. You can leave this on overnight for best results. You can also apply a mixture made of rose petals, honey and milk and apply this to your lips. Leave it on for as long as you can. Not only will this lighten the color of your lips, it will also lend them a rosy hue. Lime juice is a natural bleaching agent that can work towards lightening your lips considerably. Do remember that you should not apply this and go out on the sun, as lime juice has a tendency to further darken light skin when exposed to the sun. The best time to apply this would be about an hour before bedtime.
