It is a common misconception that dark lips are an indication of bad health and are an unnatural state of the skin and mucosa. Lips darken over a period of time naturally, and therefore it just might be a genetic destiny. In fact, you just might have a family history of it. The lips are similar to any other skin on your body and contain the skin pigment melanin. There are many triggers over the course of one's life that causes excess melanin production from the presence of androgen to excess insulin in the blood. Therefore, it might make sense to see a doctor or a dermatologist to be absolutely sure.

While smoking, tea and coffee consumption cannot be generally implicated as causes, it is probably worth it to stop consuming them all the same to eliminate the possibility that they are a cause. Just in case the discoloration is because of tanning from sun exposure, use a sunscreen and apply it to your lips. Glycerin and petroleum jelly can also be used to ensure that the lips are always moistened. This also makes it easier to exfoliate the skin of the lips. You should make it a practice to lightly brush your lips with a soft toothbrush every morning after applying olive oil to get rid of dead skin. After brushing your lips apply another coat of olive oil or use a lip balm. When applying lipstick you may at times notice that tiny vertical lines that show up. In such cases you should just apply your lipstick vertically and not horizontally. This makes the lines less noticeable. Apply a mixture if almond oil, glycerin, honey and rose water. This mixture should be prepared with equal portions of all ingredients. Consider applying a lighter shade of lipstick. Darker shades make your lips appear smaller. You should also define your lips with a pencil before applying lipstick. Ensure that while defining your lips you do not go outside your natural lip line. After defining the lips fill it in with lipstick. Before applying lipstick draw a line with a brown pencil on the center of your upper lip. This helps give a fuller look to your top lip. To get a fuller look for your lips consider using glossy lipsticks and frosty shades. Matte shades make your lips look thinner.

Apply tomato paste and milk cream for soft pink lips. You can also apply a mixture of rose petals and milk cream. Applying almond paste also helps add a glow to the lips.
