Pores are very tiny apertures in the skin that are not visible to the naked eye. These tiny pores are concerned with the job of eliminating oily secretions, uric acid, salts and water from the body. The formation of large open pores is primarily due to an excess of oil being secreted by the skin. This excessive oil secretion is brought about by hormonal changes within one's body, when testosterone (the male hormones) becomes increasingly dominant, particularly during puberty. These hormones basically control and regulate the activity of the oil glands. When the level of testosterone increases, the activity of the oil glands increases as well, leading to an over production of oil. The skin has to now deal with this overproduced oil secretions, by bringing about an increase its elimination. Since the amount of oil effusion by the skin has now increased, the opening of the pores enlarges.

Large pores have a tendency to get blocked easily with skin that has been shed, resulting in the formation of blackheads or they can get clogged with bacteria, leading to the formation of pimples. The appearance of open pores can be reduced with a few home remedies. Mix together 2 tablespoons of rice flour and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Now add enough honey to the mixture to make a thick paste. Use this paste to scrub the face, concentrating on the area with the enlarged pores. The rice flour will help in sloughing the upper layer of the skin leaving it smooth and soft. Honey being rich in amino acids and vitamins will help in moisturizing the skin, while the lemon juice will dissolve any sebum which is causing blockages. This scrub should be used three times a week to keep the skin oil free.

Chop a small piece of onion, cucumber and carrot and grate them. Mix the grated pieces together and apply it on the face. Leave it on for about 20 minutes, after which wash it off with some cold water that has few drops of lemon juice added to it. This treatment will have a deep cleansing effect on the skin and should be done twice a week. Pour lemon juice into an ice tray and place in the freezer in order to make ice cubes. Use some warm water to rinse your face, after which take an ice cube and rub it all over the face. This will keep the pores oil free and will also help in tightening them.
