Hair that is healthy appears thick, shiny, lustrous and devoid of any split ends. Split ends are a very common phenomenon in extremely dry or damaged hair. Such kind of hair tends to be brittle and easily susceptible to breakage. Split ends are caused when the cuticle, the layer that protects the hair, is stripped off the tips of the hair. This normally happens when the oil secreted on the scalp is unable to reach the tips of the hair or also when the cortex loses its moisture giving the hair a dry and coarse appearance. There could also be several other reasons that can cause the hair to look like this, namely: dry weather, extensive use of chemicals on the hair, combing the hair when it is still wet and the use of hair dryers and rollers. Unfortunately straightening your hair would not be a very good choice to make. This will simply add insult to injury, by worsening the condition of your hair. What you first need to do is treat the dry and brittle condition of your hair and restore the lost strength to your hair.

Here are a few home remedies that can be used for treating the dry condition of your hair. The best way of treating split ends it to keep the hair moisturized; this can be achieved by oiling the hair regularly. Coconut oil or almond oil can be used for this purpose. Warm a tablespoon of any one of the oils and then gently massage it into the scalp for about fifteen minutes. This will ensure that the oil seeps into the skin to nourish the hair roots. Next take a damp, warm towel and wrap your hair with it. After about 10-15 minutes, rinse you hair with lukewarm water. This is considered to be one of the best remedies for dry hair.

Avocado is also very good for treating dry and damaged hair. Mash one over ripe avocado and add a teaspoon each of jojoba oil and wheat gem oil to it. Now apply the mixture into your scalp and let it stay for about 20 minutes, after which rinse it off thoroughly with warm water. Papaya is another fruit that is useful for treating this condition. Deseed one ripe papaya and mash it, then add the pulp to ½ a cup of yogurt. Apply this mixture both the scalp and hair. After letting the application stay on for 15-20 minutes, wash it off with warm water.
