The skin peels naturally in an attempt to shed of the dead skin and give rise to the fresh new skin underneath. However, in some cases this peeling can increase excessively and could be indicative of a skin condition. The cause must be determined in these cases, so that the appropriate treatment can be administered. The skin of the hands and feet are usually prone to peeling due to various reasons. Skin conditions such as infections like erythroderma and eczema, dryness of the skin in winter months and increased exposure to the sun can result in peeling of the skin on the feet and hands. Usually peeling and flaking of the skin on the feet indicates the possibility of a fungal infection. It there is also itching on the soles of the feet, then it could be Athlete's foot. This is a contagious condition and causes the skin to become thick and scaly.

There are various natural ways by which one can treat the condition of peeling feet. You can make your son soak his feet in a tub of water to which some apple cider vinegar has been added. This can be done twice daily for twenty minutes each time. Zinc based ointments and antifungal powders are also readily available over the counter and can be used to treat skin infections of the foot. A natural antifungal remedy is to apply tea tree oil to the feet before going to bed at night. Skin conditions such as athlete's foot requires that the individual maintains proper hygiene so that the feet are kept clean at all times. This will restrict further growth and spread of the microorganisms. Washing the feet properly, especially between the toes is important. The feet must also be dried thoroughly after washing as fungus and bacteria thrive in damp places. Shoes and socks must also be cleaned regularly. Cotton socks are a better option.

Eczemas can also cause peeling of the skin. There are many types of eczemas which occur due to various reasons. It could occur due to contact with skin irritants such as poison ivy or certain chemicals that are harsh on the skin. Allergic reactions can also result in eczema. Abnormalities in the immune response of the body may also lead to eczemas. To prevent peeling of the skin on the feet, moisturizer can be applied after taking a bath. A mixture of olive oil, honey, turmeric and sandalwood powder works very well in treating flaking and peeling skin. A paste of grated cucumber may also be applied to the feet. Eczemas can be treated by applying mint juice to the affected areas. These remedies used daily will help to tackle the problem of peeling skin.
