Fair skin has become synonymous with beauty and every one aspires to have fairer skin. However, the color of the skin is something we are all born with and it is by no means a measure of beauty. The health of the skin is more important than its color. Healthy skin appears fresh and glowing and automatically adds to the beauty of an individual. So rather than trying to get your skin to change its color, it is wiser to focus on providing the best care to the skin you already have. It is also possible that over the years, the skin tends to become darker than it was before. This could occur due to many reasons such as prolonged and continuous exposure to the sun's rays, hyper pigmentation, intake of certain drugs and medications and skin conditions. Dryness of the skin could also cause darkening to some extent.

The right care and precautions can prevent your skin from turning darker. Protection from the ultra violet rays of the sun is very important. Wear a sunscreen whenever you are going outdoors. The SPF or sun protection factor of the sunscreen must be above 15. Also remember to douse the body well with the sunscreen. Most people usually fail to put enough sunscreen on the body to provide the adequate protection. It would also be wise to cover all the areas that are usually exposed to the sun. A healthy diet and abundant water consumption is a must for healthy and hydrated skin. Hyper pigmentation and other skin conditions can be prevented by taking food that is high in fiber so that the toxins are easily eliminated from the body.

Sometimes the dead skin cells accumulate on the skin, making the skin appear dull and darker than it normally is. This can be taken care of by practicing regular exfoliation. A homemade exfoliating scrub is made by mixing brown sugar and oatmeal into a paste and gently scrubbing the skin with it. An effective skin lightening scrub can be made using yogurt and crushed oats that have been cooked slightly. This can be applied to the skin after a warm bath and then rinsed off with cold water. Lemon juice can also be used directly or by mixing with cucumber juice. This is very beneficial in lightening the skin due to its natural bleaching effect. Grated potato can also be rubbed on the skin for a lightening effect. Application of a paste of honey and saffron is also very effective in lightening the skin.
