An effective hair rinse is made by mixing the juice of a fresh lemon with a quart of water. Rinse the hair with this solution after shampooing. Lemon juice is acidic in nature and therefore causes a tightening of the cuticles and also gives a glossy sheen to the hair. A nourishing shampoo can also be made with lemon juice. You can take one teaspoon each of lemon juice and olive oil, one egg, a few pieces of mild soap and half a cup of warm water. Allow the pieces of soap to soak in the water and then add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. This homemade shampoo can be made in advance and stored for later use. A rich and hydrating conditioner can also be made using lemon. Take four tablespoons of henna powder, one egg, juice of half a lemon and a tablespoon of any hair oil. After beating the egg to a frothy consistency, add the henna powder slowly. Then add the lemon juice and water and mix. Allow the mixture to stay for an hour and then massage into the scalp and hair shaft. Leave it in the hair for one hour, before rinsing and shampooing. You will not require any additional conditioner after this.
Another beneficial use of lemon is in making a conditioning hair pack. For this you will require a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice, one whole egg, a couple of tablespoons each of honey and any hair oil, and a small amount of essential oil. After mixing all the ingredients, apply it to the scalp and hair and leave it on for thirty minutes. You can then shampoo with lukewarm water. You can also make a hair spray using lemon which works like a leave-in conditioner. Slice a couple of lemons and simmer them in about four cups of water for fifteen minutes. Once half the quantity has evaporated, strain and add a few drops of essential oil. You can then pour this solution in a spray bottle and store in the refrigerator.
