Itchiness of the scalp can result due to a number of conditions. A dry scalp is one of the most common reasons for this. It causes flaking and scaling of the scalp, in addition to itching and irritation. Dryness of the scalp can be caused due to harsh ingredients contained in shampoos and hair cosmetics, increased sun exposure and inadequate nutrition. Repeatedly scratching the scalp due to the dryness can cause redness and swelling. Another condition that is known to cause an itchy scalp is seborrheic dermatitis. This condition causes scaling of the scalp in the form of greasy flakes. The skin on the scalp may also turn red and in some cases, a rash can also develop on the back, chest and face.

Scalp acne or scalp folliculitis can also occur on the scalp. This is usually the result of increased stress. Buildup of oil on the scalp causes irritation and itching. Bacteria or yeast can affect the hair follicles and cause infection. Generally, small pustules appear on the scalp, especially along the hairline. In severe cases, a form of scalp acne known as necrotica miliaris develops in which larger boils appear. This condition usually results in scarring, which is similar to that of chicken pox. Use of harsh hair products can also result in scalp acne.

To restrict the spread of scalp acne, it is important to wash your hair frequently so that there is no accumulation of oil. Use a mild shampoo that is customized for daily use. Refrain from using anti-dandruff shampoos as they are harsh on the scalp. Also regulate your diet so that it does not contain fatty foods that add a lot of oil to the system. A balanced diet consisting of fruits and vegetables and plenty of water is ideal in the prevention of any type of skin condition. It is also advisable that you consult a dermatologist to determine the extent of the condition and the appropriate course of treatment. This will prevent further spread and aggravation. You can apply a moisturizing hair pack consisting of rose water, fuller's earth and lemon juice. Mix the ingredients well and apply thoroughly to the scalp and hair shaft. You can use this hair pack every week for best results. A nourishing hair mask can also be made using egg yolk, honey, tomato juice and coconut milk. Mix everything together and apply to the hair. Leave it on for an hour, before rinsing with lukewarm water. This will reduce the oiliness of the scalp and provide important nutrients to the hair follicles as well. An important point to be noted in the treatment of scalp acne is that products used to treat facial acne must never be applied to the scalp as it can have adverse effects.
