With the surge in the marketing of fairness products, everyone seems to be craving for that perfect fair skin. However, skin color is not something that can be bought or acquired. Our natural skin color is determined by the amount of melanin that is produced by the body. Melanin is a colored pigment that is produced by body cells called melanocytes. Genetic factors determine skin color and those belonging to tropical regions and places of high altitudes have a skin color that is darker than others. This is because the exposure to the ultra violet radiation present in the sun's rays is greater in these areas. This sun exposure stimulates the melanocytes into producing an increased amount of melanin in order to protect the skin from the harmful UV radiation of the sun.

Having dark skin is by no means considered less attractive, as dusky skin tones are known to be very appealing as well. The most important thing is to take care of your skin, as healthy skin is a more attractive trait, than just the color of the skin. To enhance your dark skin you need to follow a proper skin care regimen which will ensure that you skin looks and feels its best at all times. Regular exfoliation is a must for any skin type to prevent the buildup of dead skin cells. You can use an exfoliating loofah or a scrub. There are many natural exfoliating scrubs that can be made at home as well. Moisturize your skin after every wash, to keep it soft and supple. Even though your skin is darker, you still need to use sunscreen when you go outdoors as it could tan and darken further. Using a sunscreen will also prevent skin blemishes such as spots and wrinkles. Intake of plenty of water and a balanced diet is also necessary for healthy skin.

Individuals with dark skin tones often face the problem of uneven skin tones, in which certain areas of the skin appear darker than the rest of the skin. For this you can rub a slice of tomato over the face and wash after ten minutes. This will have a gentle bleaching effect which will serve to balance out the uneven areas of the skin. A paste of lemon juice and yogurt also works well in treating uneven skin tones. Other than skin care, the right make-up will help greatly in enhancing dusky skin. Use make-up products that do not contain harsh chemicals and are mild on the skin. Warmer tones such as brown, terracotta and maroon suit dark skin tones very well. Pinks are reds must be avoided as they do not blend well with dark skin. Use matte make up to emphasize your skin tone and use bronze or gold highlights for best results.
