Dark circles are usually a symptom, rather than a problem in themselves. They are a symptom of eye strain, tension, lack of sleep or age. You can determine what is causing your dark circles. If too much tension or lack of sleep leads to development of dark circles, it is easy to get rid of them by simply sleeping more and taking care of the causes of tension. Sometimes, age can also cause dark circles. This is particularly true if you are suffering from stress as your age advances. This will lead to dark circles appearing faster and also looking more prominent.
Eye strain can occur due to a variety of reasons. You could strain your eyes by staring for too long at a screen or a monitor. Watching too much television can also give your eyes enough strain to cause dark circles. Reading in poor light, or reading while reclining can also cause eye strain. While there are other manifestations of eye strain, dark circles is the cosmetic side effect. The first thing you would need to do is to check whether you are suffering from eye strain due to the reasons listed above. If so, then you can start taking care of them by beginning to eliminate the most obvious reasons. If this does not really work, there are some simple things you can do at home to reduce dark circles.
Make a concoction of milk cream to which a few strands of saffron have been added. Leave this to soak for a day and then apply to your dark circles. Saffron has the property to lighten the darkness of your skin and will also add a glow to it. Milk cream will moisturize your skin, thus making it suppler and healthier. Another effective remedy is to make a mixture of equal parts of tomato juice and aloe vera gel and apply this to the darkened areas. This will help in reducing the darkness by mildly bleaching the skin. You can also apply simple hydrogen peroxide to your dark circles in order to lighten them. Do remember to only do this at night, because it is not advisable to go out in the sun with traces of hydrogen peroxide on your skin. This will gradually darken your skin further instead of lightening it. An old homeopathic remedy for dark circles is to apply tincture of iodine to them. This will take a considerable amount of time to get rid of them, however.
