Information on Skin Cancer in Olden Times
The word cancer derives from Greek physician, Hippocrates, who used the Greek words, carcinoma and carcinos to describe tumors. Hippocrates gave cancer its name, but he was not the first to learn about the disease. The earliest documented case of skin cancer dates back to 1500 b.c. in Egypt. The Egyptians used a method of destroying the tumor with a hot instrument. According to the Egyptians there was only palliative treatment for skin cancer. Evidence suggests that they were able to distinguish between malignant and benign tumors. Surface tumors were surgically removed, using methods similar to our modern practices. Early physicians like Hippocrates believed an excess of black bile to be responsible for skin cancer. This remained the prevalent thought for the next 1400 years. The ancient Egyptians believed that cancer was caused by the gods.
In the 17th century the lymph theory replaced Hippocrates black bile theory. This gave new insights into the causes of cancer, and it wasn't until late in the 19th century, that Rudolph Virchow, recognized that cancerous cells, derived from other cells. There were other theories as well that suggested causes as varied as parasites, trauma and it was believed that cancer could spread like a liquid. German surgeon, Karl Thiersch later inferred that cancer could spread through malignant cells. The biggest developments in cancer research occurred in the 19th century. Identification of carcinogens, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and improved means of treatment and diagnosis were researched.
