Causes, Symptoms and Treatment for Skin Cancer
The leading cause of skin cancer is prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun damages the DNA in a person's skin. Although the body usually repairs this damage, in many cases cumulative sun exposure does not give the body an opportunity to do so. In such cases, gene mutations occur and thus skin cancer develops. Scientists advise a sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 15.
Skin cancer tends to be more prominent in areas that have minimum cloud coverage and receive more sunlight. It is more likely to occur in people who have fair skin that either burns or freckles in the sun. People with a family history of skin cancer have a significantly higher risk of getting skin cancer themselves.
There are three common types of skin cancer: Basal cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Melanoma. While Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer, it is also poses the smallest threat, while Melanoma is the least common and deadliest type of skin cancer due to its rapid progression.
There are various options available today for the treatment of skin cancer. Depending on the type of cancer and the stage in which it was diagnosed, a doctor may recommend Radiation therapy, Cryosurgery or Mohs micrographic surgery.
