Type of Skin Cancer

There are three common types of skin cancer:  Basal cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Melanoma, with Basal cell carcinoma being the most common of the three. These cancers are named according to the different layers of the skin in which they occur.

Basal cell Carcinoma can appear as red irritated patches of skin, shiny translucent nodules, or in some cases, as a waxy scar. Basal cell Carcinoma is a non melanoma skin cancer that rarely spreads to the other organs of the body. Basal cell Carcinoma cancers can spread slowly to areas surrounding the cancerous growth and so it necessary for every trace of the growth to be surgically removed.

Squamous cell carcinoma generally appears as crusted or scaly lesions or as inflamed red nodules. This cancer is a non melanoma skin cancer that begins in the upper layer of the epidermis, in the squamous cells. If left untreated, Squamous cell carcinoma will slowly spread to the other organs in the body.

Although Melanoma is a relatively uncommon form of cancer, it is definitely the most lethal of all skin cancers. Melanoma cancer begins in the melanocytes (cells that give the skin its color) and can rapidly spread to the internal organs. Melanoma typically develops in a pre-existing mole and so it is important to have a biopsy in case of a change in the colour or size of a mole.
