Symptoms of Melanoma Skin Cancer
Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous of all skin cancer types. It is the leading cause of almost all skin cancer fatalities. Surviving this type of cancer depends purely on early detection of the disease. In the United Kingdom alone around 7,000 people are found to have the disease each year. It has been found to be marginally higher in women as compared to men, and is extremely rare for people with dark skin.
This type of skin cancer has it's beginnings in the pigmentation system of the skin. This system is responsible for skin tan. Melanoma is caused by an overgrowth of the melanocyte cells in the epidermis. These cells are responsible for the production of melanin, a pigment released when the skin undergoes exposure to the sun. This form of skin cancer often spreads to other organs and tissues, making it the most serious of all forms of skin cancer.
Melanomas are generally black or brown looking lesions on the surface. Melanomas often start in moles and in areas of skin that look normal. In rare cases, the tumour may have its origins in the respiratory passage, the eyes, the intestine, or even in the brain. Changes in the shape, size, color or the elevation of a mole could be an indication of this form of cancer. If a new mole appears during adulthood, or there is a new pain, ulceration, itching or bleeding of a mole that already exists, it should be checked immediately.
