Symptoms and Treatment for Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer

Skin cancers that usually occur in either basal cells or squamous cells are classified as nonmelanoma skin cancers. In most cases, non-melanoma skin cancers develop on the face, neck ,hands and other parts of the body that are frequently exposed to sunlight.

Although there are cases in which these cancers can be fast growing, they seldom spread to the other parts of the body. As they are relatively non-invasive, they do not pose a great threat and require less medical treatment as compared to melanoma cancers.

The main treatments for Nonmelanoma skin cancers include simple excision, Electrodessication and curettage surgery, Radiation Therapy, Cryosurgery and Mohs micrographic surgery. The course of treatment that would be best for you will depend on the severity of the cancer and the stage in which it was diagnosed. If the growth is in a visually prominent area, you could discuss a less invasive procedure (like Immunotherapy) with your doctor. As per my knowledge, Mohs micrographic surgery has the highest cure rate, though it is slightly more invasive as compared to newer treatments. I suggest that you read up on various available treatments so that you are completely informed, but make sure that you follow the advice of your doctor. You need to keep in mind at all times, that your doctor is the best person to direct you and if you are not completely reassured, you should opt for a second opinion.
