Causes of Skin Cancer
Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that is found in the melanocytes. These cells are responsible for giving skin cells their colour and the cancer generally occurs in adults but might also be found in adolescents and children. The other type of cancer appears in the basal or squamous cells of the epidermis (the upper layer of the skin which also contains melanocytes). The causes for both forms of skin cancer are almost the same and are listed below.
People who are fair skinned or have red or blond hair are more susceptible to the disease. Over exposure to the sun for extended periods has also been identifies as a cause. The cancer is hereditary and people who come from families who have had cancer also stand a higher chance of developing cancer. The appearance of an excess amount of moles or sores that refuse to heal can also put you at risk of developing cancer. Also people who live in areas where there are high levels of UV radiation are also susceptible to cancer.
The best way to reduce the risk of skin cancer is to refrain from exposing oneself to sun for prolonged periods. The sunlight damages the DNA in the skin cells and increases the risk of the development of malignant cells that cause the cancer.
