Causes and Risk of Skin Cancer

The two types of skin cancer are melanoma and non-melanoma which are the most commonly occurring forms of skin cancer. The cancer if left untreated eventually spreads to the other parts of the body through the blood stream or the lymph system and can be fatal. The cancer is basically caused by malignant tumors that are formed when the skin cells start to multiply uncontrollably and retard the normal process of cell development. These cells multiply and start spreading to other cells by absorbing their nutrients and thus destroying them and forming more malignant tumors. The tumors or sores often have a small crusty appearance and are red or pink in color.

Generally the best way to determine if your are at risk of skin cancer is to perform a self examination, check for the appearance of an excess amount of moles or the formation of sores or lumps that refuse to heal or have been present for some time. They are generally asymmetrical when divided in the centre, are sometimes inflamed and have a scaly or waxy appearance with a pink or red base. However these signs may not be purely indicative of cancer and if you do find them on your body the next best thing to do is consult your doctor for a further examination.
