Neem powder, as the name suggests, is made from the Indian herb Neem. It has been in use as a remedy for the past five thousand years. It is known as the Margosa tree in the English language and has anti- bacterial, anti-protozal, anti- parasitic and anti- fungal properties. This makes it an effective agent in fighting of the invasion of bacteria and various other infections caused by micro-organisms. The Neem leaf can be made into powder form or the oil can be extracted from the leaf. These derivatives are just as effective as the original leaf and are much easier to use and apply.
Neem powder when applied to a wound helps in preventing any kind of infection during the healing process as it has certain anti- bacterial properties which help kill off any infecting bacteria. Neem leaves are also used when taking a bath (a common practice in India) and helps the body cope with any of the common infections that one might contract during the course of the day. Neem water can also be used to treat burn injuries and helps in the thinning of scar marks. When Neem powder (made into a paste by mixing it with a little water) is applied to the body it is very effective in reliving the joint and nerve pain symptoms related to rheumatoid arthritis, lower back pain, gout and musculoskeletal pains. Neem powder when used in a paste form can be applied to the hair to help relive dandruff and lice infections. It is also useful in curbing excessive hair loss as well as the prevention of premature graying.
In terms of skin care, Neem can cure an outbreak of acne and mild infections of ringworm and eczema. It is very effective in getting rid of itchiness, rashes and certain skin allergy symptoms. Neem also helps lighten dark circles under the eyes and to a certain extent prevents the overproduction of melanin which is responsible for pigmentation; thus inhibiting skin darkening. In addition to being able to lighten skin, Neem also slows down the process of skin wrinkling that occurs due to old age. In addition to Neem powder, the herb is also available in a capsule form which is just as effective as its powder counterpart. In conclusion Neem in its natural or powder form has few side effects - you should avoid over use - and can safely be used for people of all ages.
