Types of Skin Cancer

Yes, there are 3 main types of skin cancer. Starting with the least to the most malignant, they are 1) Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC), 2) Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), and 3) Melanoma. What is common to all types is the fact that all are triggered off by overexposure of the skin to harsh sunlight, especially in cases where the skin has not been adequately protected.

Both BCC and SCC are classified as non-Melanoma types of skin cancer. They are relatively more benign in their impact than Melanoma. BCC primarily affects the face. In this case consistent exposure to the UV rays of the sun trigger off an adverse reaction. It shows up as outgrowths on various areas of the face including lips, cheeks, and most commonly the nose. The growths start off as waxy-looking patches. They are usually painless and end up as small depressions with raised edges. This type is most common and rarely fatal. SCC on the other hand affects the skin on any part of the body that has been over exposed to strong sunlight. It is detected through the appearance of reddish lumps on the skin that turn into slow-to-heal ulcers. This type can be fatal if left untreated for long.

Melanoma, the final type, is not as common (although the frequency is increasing rapidly), but the most fatal. It can lead to death. Unlike the earlier two types, it is not so much the duration of sun exposure but the intensity. A person who has received at least 2 really severe sun burns before the age of 18 increases his or her predisposition to developing this type of skin cancer. It is thus sensible to avoid overuse of artificial tanning techniques like tanning beds or even prolonged bouts on the beach without a sunscreen.
