Facial Skin Cancer

There is no such type of cancer as 'cancer of the face'. There are however different types of cancer, some of which often occur on the face. Basal cell and squamous cell cancer are two such types of cancer. These are part of the non melanoma group.
Sunlight is the main culprit, with over 90 percent of these cases being directly attributed to it. The disease is triggered by damage done to the skin by sun rays. People exposed to high or excessive levels of radiation from the sun are more susceptible and can develop the disease as early as at twenty or thirty years, but this is much less as compared to with older patients.

Scar-like changes, small lumps, or eczema-like changes are generally the early signs of skin cancer. It can also manifest itself in a small sore with raised borders. Sores that refuse to heal or grow bigger or even turn into tumours are generally warning signs. Such signs around the orifices need particular attention as they can behave aggressively.

Squamous cell carcinoma has a faster growth rate as compared to basal cell carcinoma particularly when it manifests itself near the near orifices like the eyes, mouth, ears, anus or vagina. In rare cases it may spreaed via the lymph vessels.

Excessive exposure to the sun is best avoided, particularly during the afternoon when the sun's rays are most damaging. Children should be particularly cautious, and require protection from sunburn, as though they may heal well the damage only becomes apparent later in life.
