Skin Cancer and Sun Tanning

Beaches and sun tan are almost synonymous, and with a tanned look, and beaches are some of the most popular destinations. According to the UK's national skin cancer prevention campaign, skin cancer claims an estimated 2000 lives every year in the UK alone. These estimates of skin cancer are very real although to some they seem far fetched. Studies have shown that people regularly exposing themselves to UV rays, to get a sun tan, increases the risk of skin cancer significantly. The danger of over exposure to the suns rays stems from the strong radiation it emits.

With the ozone layer having been significantly depleted over the past decades, it's effectiveness in filtering ultra violet radiation has diminished significantly enough to be a cause for concern.

Exposure levels are higher during the noon, particularly in summer. Levels of exposure are also much higher closer to the equator and in mountainous regions, as the rays are 25 percent stronger, having to travel a shorter distance.

There are two types of ultra violet radiation:

UVA Radiation: Penetration from these rays is quite deep into the skin, causing fast, temporary and direct pigmentation. They damage the skin by reducing its elasticity and also quicken the aging process.

UVB Radiation: This type of radiation causes sun burn, and in repeated doses can lead to irreversible skin damage and even cancer. In fact increasing UVB exposure by just 5 percent, increases the risk of cancer by fifteen percent.
