Childrens with Skin Cancer
Skin cancer generally occurs in portions of the skin that have undergone prolonged exposure to the sun's UV rays. Children are particularly susceptible to skin cancer due to the outdoor nature of their daily activities. Children should be educated on skin cancer and its preventive measures.
The treatment for Skin cancer in children depends on the child's medical history, the type of cancer as well as his/her tolerance for required medications and procedure. Basal cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Melanoma are the three common types of skin cancer. Each cancer has its own distinctive characteristics and therefore their own treatments. Surgery is the most common treatment especially used in cases of Basal cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma cancers. These types of skin cancers generally require a minor surgery. However in cases that have been diagnosed at a later stage, an extensive surgical procedure may be necessary. Excision and Curettage and Electrodesiccation are two methods used to remove cancerous skin tissue. Cryosurgery uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy the growth. Mohs microscopically controlled surgery is often used to treat recurrent tumors by removing the growth in layers and examining each of them for malignant cells. This treatment ensures that all cancerous cells are removed while minimizing the amount of damage done to the surrounding healthy tissue.
Other treatments include Photodynamic therapy Laser therapy Chemotherapy Radiation therapy and Immunotherapy of melanoma
