Information on Skin Cancer
One out of three diagnosed cancers in the world is skin related. According to estimates from the World Health Organisation there are at least 132,000 new cases of malignant melanoma, resulting in around 66,000 deaths, and well over 2 million cases of the other skin cancer types every year. In the United States, one in every two cancer cases is skin related. There are an estimated 1.1 million reported cases of skin cancer in the United States alone.
These figures that are projected by the WHO are found to be steadily rising, and according to the WHO the skin-cancer epidemic can be expected to accelerate: In the case of melanoma the annual incidence rate is believed to have risen threefold in Norway and Sweden during the past 45 years. In the United States it is estimated to have doubled.
The WHO attributes this dramatic rise to the increased use of artificial-tanning facilities. In 2005, the World Health Organization issued a statement, stressing the dangers posed from artificial tanning and warned that the usage of tanning beds for individuals under 18 should not be permitted.
The increase in skin cancer incidence is believed to be due to an ever increasing popularity of the tanned look, which drives people to expose themselves to high levels of radiation. Corresponding with this rise in beach bathers has been the depletion of the ozone layer, an event with disastrous consequences, the effects of which are already beginning to be felt.
