What is the procedure for the prognosis for skin cancer?

Skin Cancer Diagnosis
Your general physician will decide on the need for further assessment after examining your skin. It has also become common for physicians to take digital photographs of suspected tumors to get them assessed by specialists via email.
A dermatologist would then examine and confirm the status if skin cancer is suspected. In most cases they would also need to perform a biopsy. This is a minor surgical procedure, involving the removal of a part of or even the entire tumor. It is then studied under a microscope, allowing the dermatologist to determine the type of skin cancer if present, and also the risk of spreading to other body parts.
In the case of basal cell carcinoma, if the biopsy involved the complete removal of the tumor, it is unlikely for there to be any need for further treatment as there is very little possibility of it spreading. For squamous cell carcinoma, further tests would be needed to ensure that the cancer has not already spread. The procedure for prognosis in this scenario would involve a physical examination of the lymph nodes. A spread of the cancer could cause swelling of glands. It could also be necessary for a biopsy to be performed on a lymph node if there is a high risk of the spread of cancer.
