Information on Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is the most commonly occurring of all cancer types and the incidence and rate of skin cancer cases has been steadily rising over the last few decades. One third of all cancer cases in the world are cancers of the skin. Figures in some countries have tripled as in Norway and Finland, while they have doubled in the United States and elsewhere. While it's practically impossible to prevent the development of skin cancer there are certain definite high risk factors that we are aware of, which can be eliminated or reduced to significantly reduce the risk. The biggest risk factor and the biggest cause of the disease is high exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. While the sun is the primary source of such exposure, manmade sources, like tanning beds are also responsible. The rates or incidence of skin cancer have seen a rapid rise in the last half century, particularly in the last few decade. This is because of the increasing popularity of the sun tanned look, for which people expose themselves to excessive radiation from sun rays and even from tanning beds. At the same time, the use of CFCs in the last century, in a number of products has led to the depletion of the ozone, which is ongoing. This means that the only natural protection from solar radiation provided by nature is and has been weakened, significantly increasing the risk of skin cancer.
