Advice on Scalp Skin Cancer
Skin cancer that afflicts the scalp is most common in men who experience balding and expose the balding scalp to harmful UV rays of the sun for an extended period of time. Although it is most common in the above-mentioned group of people, these in no way means that people who do not have a hair loss problem are immune from this type of cancer. It can afflict any individual who has had excessive exposure to sunrays.
Skin cancer of the scalp is usually of the Non-melanoma type of cancer that is classified as Squamous Cell Carcinoma. This is different from Basal Cell Carcinoma that primarily affects the face and is rarely fatal. Squamous Cell Carcinoma on the other hand affects all those areas of the skin that have been overexposed to the sun, including arms, shoulders, legs, and the scalp.
It is characterized by the appearance of reddish bumps that turn into ulcerous looking lesions. These lesions tend to bleed and over time prove resistant to incorrect treatment. The cancerous nature of these lesions can be detected by a biopsy. This will not however get rid of the cancer. In order for this to occur the bumps or affected areas need to be surgically removed. Depending on the level to which the cancer has advanced other forms of treatment may need to be explored.
