Skin Cancer Treatment Team
The first line of defense against suspected skin cancer is a visit to the GP and making sure that the lesions/growths/warts/moles that are tell-tale signs of various types of non-melanoma type of cancer or melanoma, are requiring further attention. Once the GP decides that the growths are an indication of skin cancer you will most likely be referred to some form of Multidisciplinary team who will work together to help you battle the cancer.
At a local hospital level, which may have a Local Skin Cancer Multidisciplinary team, while larger hospitals have the capacity to operate a cancer center or plastic surgery unit will have a Specialist Skin Cancer Multidisciplinary Team. These teams will consist of doctors, nurses and other support staff, all of whom have a specialized interest in and knowledge of skin cancer. These teams will undergo regular training in the area of skin cancer detection, prevention, and treatment and depending on the area that is being served there may be multiple such teams of trained skin specialists.
Depending on the nature and severity of the skin cancer you have or many not have to go through all the various levels of skin specialists. Relatively early stages of Basal Cell Carcinoma can be tackled by the GP if he or she is a member of the Local Skin Cancer Multidisciplinary Team. More severe types and stages are referred to either local or specialist levels of the teams.
