My mother and father are facing the problem of Leukoderma. Can I face the same problem and can my children face the same problem? Is this problem a hereditary one?

Leucoderma refers to the disease which leaves white patches on the skin. This disease is also known by the name of Vitilgo. When one suffers from this diseases what actually happens that the pigment which gives our skin its distinctive color is gradually lost. This pigment is known as Melanin and when our body begins losing this pigment, we notice that the outer layers of our skin begin to lose color. This shows up as patches of white skin. This usually begins as a small patch. Soon the skin shows various small patches. With the passage of time these small patches merge together and form one large patch of white skin. In time patients end up with white skin all over their body.

Although this disease does not cause any harm to anyone, it can be very distressing to the patient since the patch of white skin gives them a distinctive look. Interestingly Leucoderma is neither contagious nor infectious. It is believed that Leucoderma is caused when a person suffers an excessive amount of mental tensions. Acute gastritis is another possible reason for a person to develop this disease. If a person has suffered from hepatitis or is prone to worms then this could be the reason for the development of Leucoderma. It is also believed that Leucoderma is hereditary.

This does not, of course, mean that you or your children are sure to get this disease. If you ensure that you are healthy there is no reason to suppose that you will have white patches of skin on your body. You should consult a medical practitioner about this and seek his opinion in this regard. You should also be aware that there are several home remedies that can be used to combat Leucoderma. For instance, the seeds of radish are very effective in fighting this disease. You can take thirty five grams of radish seeds and grind these to a paste. You can use two teaspoons of vinegar to grind the seeds to a paste. This can be applied to the white patches. You can also use whole turmeric in treating the white patches. Soak the whole turmeric in water and leave it overnight. In the morning it should be boiled till the water is reduced. This should be strained and then mixed with mustard oil. Now this mixture should be heated. The water in the mixture should be allowed to evaporate and only the oil should remain. This should be strained and stored. This can be used on the white patches.
