African American Skin Care African American skin has a few differentiating characteristics, but by and large it is pretty much the same as any other type of skin.
The most important point to keep in mind at all times is that African-Americans have a tendency towards hyper-pigmentation. This means that it is much easier for you to get darker patches or discolorations due to the higher amount of melanin in your skin. Age and harsh skin care products and regimens can cause melanin protectors in the skin to get discoloured. Before using a new product, make sure that you conduct an overnight patch test. Dry skin is a relatively common problem for people with darker skin. It also tends to be very noticeable as the uppermost layer of your skin sloughs off leaving minute white flakes of skin. Make sure that you use a moisturiser daily if you have dry skin.
Most African American women know that they have a lesser chance of getting skin cancer and so they tend to disregard sunscreen lotions. It is very important to use a good sunscreen lotion as this will help to prevent hyper-pigmentation. Make sure that you do not use sunscreen lotions or cosmetic products that contain titanium dioxide. Titanium dioxide generally remains as lighter fine particles on the surface of your skin giving it an ashen look.
