Amoxicillin Effects on Skin Amoxicillin or ampicillin can some times lead to rashes in children if they are taking them as medicine. This type of rash appears on fifth day after the child has started taking the medicine. In some cases the rash may appear in the period of 5th day to 16th day after the child starts taking the medicine. The rash is red or pink and may spread on face. It is small and flat and appears on the trunk. Five percent to ten percent of the children who take amoxicillin get rashes. The appearance of the rash does not mean that the child is allergic to amoxicillin. The rash is harmless. The rash lasts for three days. This period also varies in some cases. The rash in these cases disappears in one to sixteen days. The rash like most of the skin rashes does not require any kind of treatment. It heals away on its own. Do not stop the daily dose of amoxicillin because the rash appears. Even if the child continues to take the medicine the rash disappears in four days. If in the rest of the life the child ever took amoxicillin he/she probably won’t get the rash again. But if the rash changes to hives or becomes itchy then a doctor is needed to be consulted.
