Skin Rash and Aids
A virus called Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Patients with AIDS lose their immunity, due to which they become more susceptible to bacterial, viral and fungal infections. Skin conditions that occur due to AIDS are quite severe. People with AIDS are more prone to skin rashes like seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, hives, popular urticaria, itchy red bump disease, folliculitis and acne-like eruptions. Seborrheic Dermatitis is a red, flaky rash on the facial area including forehead, cheeks, nose, eyebrows and ears, chest, scalp and groin. Psoriasis in HIV patients becomes worst and features increased number of scale-covered, silvery, salmon-pink patches all over the body, especially on knees, elbows and scalp. There may be scaly, thick lesions of psoriasis on palms and soles along with pus-filled blisters in some patients. In some patients, there may be involvement of whole body in severe psoriasis with redness, itching and scaling of skin. The skin rashes in hives, itchy red bump disease and popular urticaria are small, pink bumps causing widespread itching. Acne-like eruptions and folliculitis are multiple, small pustules which usually develop around the hair follicles on face, chest, scalp, back, buttocks and legs. This kind of skin rash may be extremely itchy which can lead to bleeding and secondary infection. In HIV patients, skin rashes due to viral infections such as shingles, hairy leukoplakia of the mouth, molluscum contagiosum, warts/verrucae vulgaris as well as fungal infections such as Candida, monilia and Cryptococcosis can lead to red, itchy skin rashes.
