Skin blemishes are nothing but marks or areas of discoloration. Blemishes are also sometimes referred to as marks left behind by white heads, pimples and black heads due to clogged pores. More often than not a person is born with a particular blemish. They can also be caused by the over use of cosmetics and toiletries; night creams, moisturizers, skin whitening creams and foundation creams being the most common culprits. Cosmetics that are likely to cause the appearance of blemishes on the skin are called comedogenics. Therefore if your skin has a tendency to acquire a blemish easily, you should only use cosmetics that have a non- comedogenic label attached to it. Other than cosmetics, factors like pollution and constant contact with rough clothing on a particular area of the skin can also cause a blemish to appear or become worse. A change in hormonal levels especially the active levels of androgen in the body is also known to cause blemishes. This happens because the hormone androgen helps stimulate the production of sebum (natural oil produced by the skin) and when an excess amount is produced it increases a bacteria's ability to grow on the skin and clog the skin pores. The clogging eventually darkens the skin resulting in a blemish.
The best way to get rid of blemishes and prevent the appearance of new ones it to eat a well balanced diet. As unrelated as this sounds, eating a well balanced diet is imperative towards maintaining healthy skin. Make sure to include in your diet nutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, zinc oxide and selenium. Each of these nutrients contains anti- oxidant properties that will help improve the collagen repair process of the skin. Essential fatty acids are also very beneficial towards maintaining clean and clear skin. The next step to reduce blemishes can be the use of a gentle facial scrub every week followed by a deep cleansing mask. The process helps exfoliate the skin and unclogs pores thus reducing the chances of dead skin build up and hence the possibility of blemishes. Calamine lotion and benzyol peroxide are also useful in getting rid of blemishes. If this is not possible then you can use ice cubes as a remedy. After a bath, place an ice cube on the blemish for about a minute and then remove it. The cold helps tone your skin and allows for the blemish to become less noticeable.
