Hair loss due to pregnancy of four months – Can pregnancy cause hair loss problems?

I have 4 months pregnancy but when I conceived baby my hair loss increased day by day and I am worried please help me out….!

During pregnancy, your body undergoes a number of changes, both physical and chemical. Your hormone levels become drastically different from what they were before you conceived, and this affects almost every aspect of your body and your health. Some of these changes are positive, while others are negative. Overall, for example, most women find that their skin glows and looks much healthier during pregnancy. However, as you are probably aware, women suffer from a number of problems too during pregnancy, ranging from back pain to dark patches of skin.

Sometimes hair loss due to pregnancy is possible but most often it occurs a few months after delivery. During pregnancy, hair fall actually decreases, and hair therefore looks much thicker and fuller. This is because the increased levels of hormones lengthen the growth cycle of hair, and hair thus takes longer to fall (hair fall itself is normal, and is simply a part of the growth process of hair). After delivery, hormone levels drop back to normal, and the hair growth cycle also returns to normal – as a result, a lot of the hair that had not fallen during the pregnancy falls during a short period of time. This however is nothing to worry about, in a sense the hair is simply catching up with its normal growth cycle.

For you of course, this doesn’t seem to be the case – from your question, it seems that you are only 4 months pregnant, and you have experienced an increase in hair fall right from the start of your pregnancy. This is most probably due to some nutritional problems; you probably have a mineral or vitamin deficiency that is causing the hair loss. While this is unlikely to proceed to a point where you experience balding, it certainly needs to be addressed. As you are aware, you are now eating for two – your diet needs to provide adequate nourishment for both you and your baby. If you do not get enough nutrition, both you and your baby will suffer.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to detect a specific deficiency, unless there are several severe symptoms. Several vitamins and minerals are required for healthy hair, and a deficiency of any one of them could cause the hair loss. You should therefore just try to eat a balanced healthy diet, one that gives you all the possible nutrients. Also, if you develop any food cravings, this is one time in your life when you can probably give in to them, as long as they are not obviously harmful. These cravings may sometimes be your body’s way of letting you know what you need.
