Vitamins and supplements for hair growth

Methotrexate, is a drug that is used for the treatment of cancer and some autoimmune diseases. The drug was discovered in the 1950s as a treatment for children with severe leukemia. Some of the other uses of this drug are also to induce an abortion and as an antirheumatic. The reason that your doctor would have asked you to stop taking this drug is to allow you to have a baby. The side effect of hair loss is something that should not happen to you on stopping this drug but this could indicate that you were taking this drug for some kind of scalp problem in the first place. This is pure conjecture and you might want to consult with a medical professional to confirm that the two events are somehow connected. On another note, hair loss in women, which corresponds to alopecia is a very complex set of processes, and could even be caused by a hormonal imbalance. Again, without a proper analysis, this is also pure conjecture.

Methotrexate works in preventing cancer by inhibiting and interfering with a cellular division process in the cell cycle. Specifically, it works as an antifolate. Folic acid is very important in two parts of cell division. The first aspect of cell division is in inhibiting the DNA synthesis within cells. The other part where folic acid plays a role is in purine synthesis. Purine is a substance that can be considered a protein base that is required for the creation of DNA and RNA. This means that all cells in the body that are dividing will summarily stop dividing on taking methotrexate. This poses no danger to the existing cells of your body; however, it will stop the creation of new cells, like tumors and the cells of an embryo. Apart from tumors, other cells that divide rapidly in the body naturally are the cells that create hair, skin, bone, and red blood cells. Therefore, when you were taking this drug, you should have experienced slow hair growth and even shedding. If you are still experiencing hair fall, you might want to give your body some time to readjust and increase your nutrition levels.

One of the most important hair care nutrients to ensure normal hair growth are the vitamins E and B7 – biotin. These can acquired from the increased intake of dairy, meat, leafy green vegetables and eggs. You could also just take supplements for this instead.
