Getting smooth and shiny hair using natural hair moisturizers
Oiling your hair is not necessarily the solution to rough and slow growing hair. If your hair has a tendency to get dry, then oil may help; however, if your scalp is already producing enough sebum, then oiling your hair will provide only marginal benefits. In your case it seems quite clear that the problem lies elsewhere – most probably failure to protect your hair from damage. Excessive exposure to sunlight, strong wind, dust, pollution, and harsh chemicals in hair products will eventually damage your hair, making it weak and rough. Weak hair will also break a lot, and this may be one reason why your hair seems to be growing slowly. Rather than the rate of growth itself, it may be the damage and breakage that is keeping your hair at more or less the same length.
You need to start taking adequate hair care measures to protect your hair from the factors mentioned earlier. If you are outdoors during the day, be sure to wear a hat. If possible, wear a scarf too, as this will also provide protection against wind, dust, and pollution. You should of course ensure that the hat and scarf are regularly washed, or else the build up of dust, dirt, sweat, and sebum on them will itself start to damage your hair. You should also avoid using any unnecessary products on your hair – oil, shampoo, and conditioner are adequate. If you use hair color, straightener, gel, mousse, or hairspray, this could be contributing to the damage. You should also ensure that the shampoo and conditioner that you use suit your hair type. There is no particular shampoo or conditioner that can be recommended for everyone. You will need to figure out what works for your hair. As for oil, coconut oil is probably the best, as it seems to penetrate the hair better than other oils, and also seems to provide more protection against protein loss and damage. Olive oil is another option.
One problem that is often overlooked is rough or inappropriate combing of hair. Hair should never be combed when it is wet, and you should never use the comb to detangle your hair. You should always allow your hair to dry before combing it. If you encounter knots, detangle them with your fingers, and then continue combing your hair. Failure to do this is often the cause of damage and breakage. Finally, you should remember that each individual’s hair grows differently – your hair may naturally grow slowly, and you may just have to accept this fact.
